VSC Fire & Security, Inc., a leading fire protection and life safety system contractor headquartered in Richmond, VA, is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to join our team.


Responsible for performing a variety of accounting functions under the direct supervision of the Assistant Controller. Position works with other accounting staff, senior management, district staff, and external auditors to accomplish job functions.


  • Knowledge and experience of accounting functions to include specialized experience in one or more of the following areas general ledger, bank reconciliations, multi-state business licenses, sales & use tax, personal property taxes and cash application.
  • 3-5 years of general accounting and bookkeeping experience are essential.
  • A business or accounting degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated PC skills to include Microsoft Office and other accounting Windows based software.
  • Ability to work with high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Must be able to handle highly confidential information.
  • Ability to represent the Company in a professional manner.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and integrity.
  • Knowledge of state registration and tax processes a plus.
  • Ability to manage deadlines is required.



  • Reconciliation of sales and use tax general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with other month-end journal entries and reconciliations as assigned.


  • Originate and maintain state business related licenses and registrations for all jurisdictions.
  • Maintain business licenses for local jurisdictions.
  • Work closely with districts when new business requires initial documents.
  • Maintain Contractor Licenses for districts as required.


  • Assist with the reconciliation and calculation of personal property taxes for corporate vehicles and other equipment for each location.
  • Maintain, reconcile and calculate sales & use tax returns for all districts.
  • Work with staff to educate them on properly calculating and recording tax.
  • Perform internal audits to ensure compliance with tax regulations.


  • Assist with year-end and tax audits.
  • Provide support for other accounting functions as needed.
  • Provide backup support for Payroll reporting, Fixed Assets, and Vehicle reporting.
  • Special projects as assigned
  • File multi-state annual reports.


Individual works in office environment utilizing standard office equipment.

Visual acuity for PC and record keeping activities, auditory acuity for telephone use, and digital dexterity for heavy PC use are required.

Occasional light lifting and moving (20 25 pounds) of office supplies.
