JOB TITLE:                          SPRINKLER DESIGN MANAGER  

CLASSIFICATION:            EXEMPT - SALARIED

REPORTS TO:                     OPERATIONS MANAGER

 

This job description outlines representative job duties associated with the position, but is not intended to be a complete or exclusive description of all possible assignments and tasks the individual employee may encounter in the course of work. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Responsible for management and supervision of the Sprinkler Design Department. Functions as a working manager performing as highly skilled senior Sprinkler designer. Assigns and monitors work of other Sprinkler designers. Oversees all aspects of the design layout, field checking, material equipment submittals, hydraulic calculations, applicable installation requirements, and close out procedures performed by the Sprinkler designers.  Insures compliance with NFPA standards.

Documents employee actions with assistance of Operations Manager. Responsible for safety and training programs for department.  Ensures company policies are observed and adhered to.

Ensures delivery of quality service to the customer while maintaining scope of the company's obligations as defined by the contract and/or approved change orders.  Works closely with Sales staff, the Operations Manager and field supervisors and technicians during all phases of contract.

Interacts and communicates in a professional and positive manner with customers, county officials, water purveyors, general contractor or project manager throughout design and installation process. Able to resolve problems or conflicts using negotiation and problem resolution skills, and through appropriate interpretations of architect drawings and specifications.

Is responsible for (or may delegate) training, utilization and troubleshooting of SprinkCad software.  Directs file management of department-created design information sheets in accordance with prescribed standards.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge and experience related to the installation and maintenance of fire protection systems and fire alarm installations.  Must have advanced knowledge of applicable State, Local, and BOCA Codes, NFPA Standards, and AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction.)  Requires minimum NICET III certification with NICET IV preferred. Proficiency in BIM is required.

Position requires proficiency in Windows based SprinkCad design software and hydraulic calculation methodology.

Ability to communicate with external representatives at all levels of the customer's organization and to represent the Company in a professional manner with good interpersonal communication skills, integrity, and with the required respect for the fire protection profession's primary goals of life safety and property protection. Demonstrated PC skills including SprinkCad software, Microsoft Office and other PC based software.

Demonstrated sense of responsibility to achieve personal and team work goals.  Must exhibit leadership and supervisory skills, including ability to communicate, address personnel issues and make fair decisions related to project demands, customer service and employee assignments.

 

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

SUPERVISION OF DESIGN DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL

  1. Reviews all documents and available information to determine scope of the assigned project.
  2. Assigns project to designated layout technician, providing appropriate level of supervision based on technical demands and scope of the project, and experience level of the technician.
  3. Monitors work in progress to assure drawings, submittals, and approval process remain within project and construction schedules.
  4. As needed, ensures that change orders are approved, documented, and are managed to the satisfaction of the customer and for the benefit of the company.
  5. Monitors activity, productivity and accuracy of Sprinkler designers to ensure effective use of manpower.
  6. Plans and monitors design hours, including necessary overtime, to maintain design costs within estimated costs to meet department's financial goals.
  7. Addresses and documents employee performance issues or attendance problems. Provides coaching and counseling to improve on the job performance. Evaluates and disciplines under the guidance of the Operations Manager.

 

FABRICATION, REQUISITIONS AND SUPPLIES

  1. Reviews fabrication and material lists submitted by Sprinkler designers to ensure cost effective utilization of materials and fabrication expense.
  2. Ensures that Sprinkler designers provide updates to purchasing as installation schedule or change orders require modifications.
  3. Works with Sprinkler designers, field superintendents, field foremen, and sales staff to effectively manage technical problems and customer satisfaction.

 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  1. Communicates regularly with General Manager, Operations Manager, Sales staff and Field Superintendent as needed to review progress of design, installation and testing of devices and systems throughout the project.
  2. Work cooperatively with Sales staff, Field Superintendent, project manager, building owner, or other trades as needed.
  3. Communicates as necessary with Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and building inspectors where required, to represent the client's interests and to resolve issues of non-compliance or discrepancy.
  4. Ensures that updated "as built" drawings are prepared when project is complete and necessary close out documents are prepared and submitted.
  5. When necessary, assists Sprinkler designers to ensure that all circumstances involving customer satisfaction are handled tactfully and with patience and integrity.

 

SAFETY/TRAINING

  1. Ensures that all department personnel follow all site-specific and company safety standards while on job-sites.
  2. Ensures that ALL accidents and injuries are reported as they occur, and follows up on lost time injuries.
  3. Ensures that all Sprinkler designers properly utilize design equipment and software provided by the company.
  4. Ensures that all Sprinkler Design Department staff using company vehicles adhere to all company driving regulations.
  5. Provides in-service training for department personnel and supports training and testing for staff NICET certification levels.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Individual works in non-smoking office environment utilizing standard office equipment and electronic software on computer desktop. May operate plotting, copying and other specialized office equipment to handle blueprints and other construction documents.

Position requires visual acuity for PC and record keeping activities; manual dexterity for drafting or mouse use on SprinkCad; auditory acuity for telephone use. Occasional use of ladders during site surveys. Ability to traverse rough construction site terrain and hard-hat areas.  May require work beyond regular business hours as well as out of town assignments. Travel may include site visits, meetings with officials, and training seminars. 

Must possess valid driver's license for use of company vehicle.

 

JOB HAZARDS:

Work performed in variety of office, commercial and industrial sites, which may include hard-hat areas.  Occasionally works 6 feet or more above ground level using ladders and lifts. On job sites, must remain alert to job-site hazards and safety requirements.
