Our fast-growing fire sprinkler protection and life safety system company has a full-time career opportunity for a Fire Protection Systems Designer for the Virginia Beach District.   With annual sales of more than $170 million, VSC Fire & Security, Inc. is growing rapidly and we are recruiting top fire protection and life safety talent to join our team.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the layout of sprinkler system drawings utilizing available information from the contract's defined scope of the project, architectural drawings, job specifications, site surveys, and relevant NFPA, IBC, UFC and local building codes.   Responsible for all aspects of the design layout, field checking, fabrication listing, material equipment submittals, hydraulic calculations, applicable installation requirements, and close out procedures.  Deliver quality service to the customer while maintaining company's obligations as defined by the contract and/or approved change orders.   Work closely with Estimating/Sales, Field Supervisors, and Technicians during installation and close out process.  Interact and communicate in a professional and positive manner with customers, county officials, water purveyors, general contractor or project manager throughout design and installation process.  

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Position requires competence with Microsoft Office with proficiency in Windows based AutoCAD and SprinkCAD design software and hydraulic calculation methodology.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with NFPA, IBC, UFC, Fire Marshals and other regulatory standards and local codes.
  • Sprinkler design training or field installation experience a plus.
  • Experience in fire protection industry with knowledge of manufacturer's product lines and equipment preferred.
  • Minimum certification at NICET Level II (or passed exam elements) required, NICET Level III preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong spatial orientation skills are essential. 
  • Ability to resolve problems or conflicts through use of negotiation/problem solving skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines as defined by the project schedule.

 

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS

SYSTEM LAY OUT

  • Review all documents and available information to correlate scope of the assigned project.
  • Request information from sales manager, project manager, contractor, or owner as needed.
  • Review architectural drawings, mechanical, site, structural and completes site surveys, and researches essential information as required for structural and/or mechanical elements.
  • Integrate other mechanical systems to ensure successful coordination with the fire suppression system and must be able to recognize potential conflicts with other trades.
  • Confirm proper water data information.
  • Review and confirm all fire and building code requirements are addressed.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA standards and insurance requirements.
  • Check initial layout against sales prepared estimate or design information sheet to determine head count or pipe quantity differences. Determine whether all major equipment required is included in scope estimate.
  • Understand scope of contract and ensure layouts are compliant.

 

DRAWINGS AND SUBMITTAL

  • Prepare piping plans per design criteria and job specifications using AutoCAD.
  • Perform required hydraulic calculations using current flow data.
  • Prepare equipment submittals and material submittals to owner or general contractor as required by contract documents.
  • Submit completed designs to county officials or AHJs and any insurers for review, approval and permitting.
  • Respond to requests for additional information, revisions and review as needed to complete approval process.
  • Seek advice and assistance from Design Manager and/or District Manager to resolve technical problems or client issues. Prepare RFIs to clarify conflicts or to obtain additional information.
  • Remain aware of job site changes, including structural and mechanical changes, revised space allocation and usage, and make necessary changes to design as may be required by code and/or AHJ approval process.
  • Ensure that possible change orders are presented for approval, documented, and managed to the satisfaction of the customer and for the benefit of the company.

 

REQUISITIONS AND SUPPLIES

  • Submit material lists to purchasing agent and requisitions devices from manufacturer(s) to meet installation schedule and deadlines and other requirements such as SWAM and Buy American Act.
  • Provide updates to purchasing as installation schedule or change orders require modifications.
  • Produce shop list utilizing computer software for fabrication of system piping.

 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Communicate with Design Manager and Field Superintendent to review design, installation and testing of devices and systems throughout the project.
  • Make site visits as needed to survey layout prior to fabrication, review work in progress, and assess possible design changes.
  • Work cooperatively with project manager, building owner, or other trades as needed.
  • Respond to inspectors, county officials, or other authorities during construction.
  • Prepare updated "as built" drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, and other closeout documents upon completion of project.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Work in office environment utilizing standard office equipment and electronic software on computer desktop.

May operate plotting, copying and other specialized office equipment to handle prints and other construction documents.  

Position requires visual acuity for PC and record keeping activities; manual dexterity for drafting or mouse use on AutoCAD; and auditory acuity for telephone use.  

Occasional use of ladders during site surveys.  

Ability to traverse rough construction site terrain and hard-hat areas.  

Standard business hours plus possible overtime and out of town assignments may be required.  Travel may include site visits, meetings with officials, and training seminars. 

NICET II certification (or passed exam elements) required; NICET III certification preferred (or within two years of employment.)

Valid driver's license and good driving record required for use of company vehicle.

 

 

JOB HAZARDS

When making site visits, may traverse rough terrain and hard-hat construction areas.  During site visits, may be required to use lifts, platforms and ladders and work 6 feet or more above ground level.  On job-sites, must remain alert to job-site hazards and safety requirements.

 

Must possess valid driver's license. Must provide criminal background information to meet Department of Criminal Justice authorization card standards.
