POSITION DESCRIPTION: Installs and tests fire suppression equipment in new or retro-fit construction projects.  Follows designed plans, communicates needed design change to fit actual site requirements.  May be responsible for materials delivered to site and for minor fabrication on job site.  Uses hand tools, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic power tools.  May work alone or with other crew members under the direction of a foreman.  May be responsible to oversee work of apprentice(s) and helper(s) assigned to project.  When assigned to work alone, is responsible for communication with site superintendent, owner and field superintendent as representative of VSC Corporation.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Completion of approved Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice Program (Levels 1-4) with Journeyman certification or 4+ years demonstrated Sprinkler Fitter experience.  Knowledge of pipefitting, related plumbing regulations and fire protection codes and standards.

Must hold valid state driver's license with acceptable driving record to be approved to drive company vehicle.

 

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
  2. Reviews plans and confirms quantity and quality of materials delivered to site

are suitable for installation as designed.  Contacts superintendent and/or designer when change orders are needed. Insures compliance with NFPA standards.

  1. Prepares material for use. May perform minor fabrication such as cutting, threading, joining pipe. May delegate tasks to helper or apprentice.
  2. Installs, hangs and connects pipe and necessary valves following designed plans. Makes minor field adjustments, and connects or ties into water supply.

Report all major deviations from plans to field superintendent and/or design manager.  Makes notations of changes and returns to designer for "as builts."

  1. Directs, inspects and verifies the work of assigned helpers and apprentices .
  2. Ensures there are no open outlets prior to water entering the system. Tests completed system for leaks and necessary water pressure. Insures system is drained correctly if system is out of service. Takes precautions such as lock out, impairment notifications, etc. while working in occupied facilities.
  3. Ensures construction site is cleaned up with waste material properly disposed of.

                        Properly stores and secures all equipment and tools.

 

  1. DAILY SITE RESPONSIBILITIES
  2. When assigned, conducts daily site inspections for methods of handling, storing, installation and testing of all materials for the project, and takes immediate steps to rectify problems or deficiencies.
  3. Ensures that tools and equipment are at hand and meet safety requirements.
  4. When assigned, communicates with job site superintendent or owner regarding work in progress.
  5. Establishes productivity and quality goals for self to meet schedule for project.
  6. Assigns and delegates tasks to helpers or apprentices to make best use of personnel available. Reviews special safety precautions or protocols required on the job site.
  7. Resolves minor job-site problems related to work crew, materials, other trades, or unexpected circumstances throughout the work day. Reports significant problems beyond fitter's direct responsibility to field superintendent immediately.

 

III.       SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. Follows all site-specific safety standards (as directed by company or client-required site safety regulations.)
  2. Reports ALL accidents and injuries to Field Superintendent as they occur
  3. May direct and inspect the work of less experienced employees
  4. Follows dress standards and use of safety devices.
  5. Follows M.S.D.S. (material safety data sheet) procedures when working with hazardous materials.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Individual works in hard-hat construction sites, including unimproved sites. Position requires ability to stand, bend, squat, climb, and be physically able to traverse rough terrain, climb ladders and scaffolding and use lifts.  Daily handling of a variety of hand tools and power equipment.  Able to move materials and equipment to a maximum of 75-100 pounds per employee.  Must remain alert to job-site hazards and safety requirements.

Position requires visual acuity to read plans, documents and meters and ability to discern colors for safety signage.

Individual works in all weather conditions.  May be required to work in confined spaces (with special training.)  Individual must have reliable transportation and be available to work additional hours or evening shift as needed.  Must be available to accept occasional assignments requiring overnight travel.

May be required to meet security screening for specific job assignments.

As a representative of the company, employee is expected to maintain acceptable interpersonal communication and appropriate behavior on the work site and with customers.

 

JOB HAZARDS:

Works in hard-hat construction areas.  May lift and move 75-125 pounds of equipment or supplies.  Works 6 feet or more above ground level (using lifts, platforms and ladders.)

May work in confined underground or crawl spaces. May work with HAZCOM materials.  Uses variety of hand tools for pipe fabrication and installation and may operate electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment using safety equipment and safety procedures.
